When a referral code "didn't work", the code itself is rarely the problem. Usually it never made it into the sign-up: the code field was collapsed and nobody opened it, another referral link clicked later overwrote it, or on MEXC the mexc- prefix was left off. First bind your UID on Fee Otter to check whether you are bound. If you are not, it comes down to how long ago you registered and whether you have deposited. Binance and MEXC let you add a code within 30 days of sign-up, Bybit and Pionex within 14 days, and BingX until your first deposit. Everywhere else, the only route is rebinding (compiled October 2026).
The most common misunderstanding is that a code can be changed later. On every exchange, a referral relationship cannot be changed once it is bound. Only accounts with no referrer at all can be fixed, and the window is shorter than most people expect: on Pionex, once you have created a bot or placed an order, the 14-day window shrinks to 72 hours.
First: are you actually bound?
Do not rely on memory. The most reliable check is to bind your UID on the Fee Otter rebate site. For exchanges that share a referral list with us, we check it within about 5 minutes: "Verified" means you are under our code, and "Pending review" after 5 hours means your UID is not on the list. Pionex, Ourbit and CoinW are reviewed at 16:00 (UTC+8) the day after the account starts trading.
On OKX and BingX you can also check inside the exchange; the path is in the "How do I check the code was applied?" section of each referral code page: OKX referral code, BingX referral code. To find your UID, see what an exchange UID is.
Find the cause from what you saw
| What happened | Most common cause | How to avoid it next time |
|---|---|---|
| No referral code field on the sign-up page | The field is collapsed by default on Binance, OKX, Bybit, Gate, Bitget, HTX and WEEX | Open the "Referral code (optional)" field and check the code is there before you submit |
| You came through our link, but someone else's code ended up bound | Another referral link was clicked before sign-up finished, and the later one overwrote ours | Pick one code and finish the sign-up from that one link |
| Entered FEEOTTER on MEXC, but nothing was bound | MEXC needs the full code with its prefix; FEEOTTER alone does not count | Enter mexc-FEEOTTER, or use our link |
| Signed up in the app and could not find the field | On Binance the app puts the field in a different place from the website, so it is easy to skip | If unsure, sign up on the website first and log in to the app afterwards |
| Typed the code by hand and it did not take | A typo | Copy and paste, or use our link |
| No rebate notice on OKX, BingX or Pionex | The code was not carried in. These three show the code's rebate rate on the sign-up page when it applies | Submit only after you see the notice |

Rules come from each exchange's official help pages; sources are in each rebinding guide and in the exchange rebinding rules table (checked September to October 2026). We are still confirming CoinW's add-later rules with CoinW; contact support if you need them. On every exchange, a bound referral relationship cannot be changed.
Worked example: what a missed code costs in a year
Take Binance, where our code gives a 40% rebate. Say you pay 200 USDT in fees a month:
- No code bound: 0 back in a year.
- Our code bound: 200 × 40% × 12 = 960 USDT.
Same trades; the only difference is whether the code made it in at sign-up. If you are still inside the window, add the code first and trade afterwards: one of Binance's conditions is "no trades yet", and on Pionex the window drops to 72 hours once you run a bot.
How to decide
- Still inside the window: Binance, MEXC, Bybit, Pionex and BingX all allow it. Add the code before you trade.
- Past the window, little in the account: rebind using the table above. This is the cheapest moment.
- Past the window, with assets and positions: read the limits in the rebinding guide first. For example, after a BingX identity transfer the old account can withdraw only 20,000 USDT per 24 hours. Then decide the order.
- Very low volume: the time a rebind takes may be worth more than the extra rebate. Run the numbers above first.
Risks and limits
- No undo: once you add a code or rebind, that relationship cannot be changed either. Check the code before you submit.
- Limited ID uses: one KYC can hold up to 5 accounts on Gate, 2 on MEXC and 1 on KuCoin. When they are used up, there is no room to rebind.
- Cooldowns after closing: 35 days on Binance and 30 days on Bitget, during which the same identity cannot register again.
- Rules change: deadlines and rebinding routes can change; each exchange's latest announcement prevails.
