If you're buying crypto for the first time and only want spot, start with Binance, Bybit, OKX or BingX. The first three have a simplified beginner mode in their apps (Binance Lite, Bybit Lite, OKX Simple mode), all four offer P2P or card purchases, and all require you to be 18 and complete KYC. The net spot taker fee after rebate is 0.055% on BingX, 0.06% on Binance and Bybit and 0.08% on OKX; if fees are all you care about, KuCoin (0.04%) and MEXC BTCUSDT (0.02%) are lower (each exchange's official pages and public API, checked 2026-10-24).
This guide covers the five things a spot beginner runs into: how hard sign-up is, how to turn money into crypto, how easy the app is, spot fees, and how safe the platform is. For a beginner, a smooth first deposit matters more than a 0.01% fee difference. If you want futures, see the futures beginner exchange comparison.
Quick answer
- Most users, most coins, deepest liquidity: Binance. Its official help says the app defaults to Binance Lite for new users; with code FEEOTTER the spot rebate is 40%, for a net taker fee of 0.06%. EU residents should first check Binance's status in their country.
- Simplest app, P2P free for most currencies: Bybit. Lite mode keeps only basics such as buy, sell and convert; the rebate is 40%, all paid by Fee Otter.
- No platform fee on P2P: OKX. Its help centre says OKX charges zero fee on P2P trading; the rebate is 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards.
- Start with the smallest amount, rebate fully automatic: BingX. The BTC/USDT spot minimum is 0.5 USDT; sign up with code FEEOTTER and BingX refunds 45% automatically, with no UID binding needed.
- Spot fees only: KuCoin's 60% rebate is fully automatic, for a net taker fee of 0.04%; MEXC BTCUSDT is 0% maker and 0.02% taker after rebate. MEXC is not on ESMA's MiCA register; KuCoin EU is authorised but, per an FMA notice, may still not commence business.

Sign-up methods and KYC from each exchange's official help pages, compiled in crypto exchange sign-up requirements (2026-10-23). Minimum orders checked on 2026-10-24 through official APIs: Binance, BingX, KuCoin; Bybit, OKX and MEXC from the same 2026-10-23 guide. Sources for fiat and beginner modes are in the sections below.
Sign-up and KYC: what you need
All six require you to be at least 18 (MEXC only says "legal age"), plus an email address or phone number and a valid government ID: passport, national ID or driver's licence. Most exchanges block deposits or trading until KYC is done, and the name and date of birth on the ID must match your sign-up details. Bybit's rule is that a driver's licence, a passport and an ID card can each verify one Bybit account; BingX does not accept driver's licences in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand or Timor-Leste.
Enter the referral code before you submit the sign-up form. BingX says the referral relationship cannot be changed after sign-up; Bybit allows a main account with no referrer to add an affiliate code once within 14 days of sign-up, and Fee Otter's affiliate ID is 163627 (steps in how to add a Bybit referral code within 14 days). Turning money into crypto: P2P and cards
If you hold fiat, you first need to turn it into USDT or another coin, and there are two common routes. P2P means buying USDT from another user: you send money to the seller's bank account, the platform locks the seller's coins and releases them once payment is confirmed. A card purchase means paying directly with Visa or Mastercard.
| Exchange | What the official page says | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Binance | P2P may charge makers or takers a transaction fee, and per-market rates only show after you log in; fiat channels differ by country, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards | Binance P2P guide (2026-10-22), Binance Lite buy and sell guide |
| Bybit | The P2P fee table lists only NGN, AZN, RUB, GHS and TJS; currencies not listed carry no transaction fee; Standard verification required first | Bybit P2P guide (2026-10-22) |
| OKX | "We charge zero fee on P2P trading"; banks or wallets may charge their own fees; you must use your own verified (real-name) bank account or payment method | OKX P2P buying guide (updated 2026-09-15, checked 2026-10-24) |
| BingX | Visa and Mastercard supported; KYC is mandatory before your first card purchase; fees vary by issuing region and card network | BingX bank card FAQ (page dated 2023-12-11, checked 2026-10-24) |
BingX's FAQ table lists 3.5% for EU-issued cards and 3.8% for non-EU cards, but the page dates from 2023, so the order page applies. OKX P2P is restricted in the UK, South Korea and Brazil (OKX Risk & Compliance Disclosure, updated 2026-07-08).
On P2P, the name on the bank account you pay from must match your exchange KYC name. Pay from someone else's account and Binance suspends your P2P access for at least 7 days; Bybit says it can suspend the account, and the seller can refuse to release the coins.
A P2P purchase is not a trading fee, so it earns no rebate. The rebate starts with your first spot order using that USDT.
How easy is the app: beginner modes
- Binance Lite: Binance's help page says the app defaults to the Lite version for new users, with a simplified interface and wallets, where you pick a coin and enter a fiat amount or quantity to buy or sell (Binance help, page dated 2021-04-12 with a note that it may be outdated).
- Bybit Lite: Bybit's official guide describes Lite as a simplified version for beginners, where you buy, sell and convert in a few taps and reach the Bybit Card and Easy Earn; derivatives, margin and options need Pro, and you can switch with one tap at any time (Bybit Lite and Pro, 2025-09-18).
- OKX Simple mode: OKX's help centre splits the app into Simple mode and Exchange mode; you can switch to Exchange mode from the app menu at any time, and your balance and positions carry over (OKX help, updated 2026-10-12).
We found no official page we could cite on whether the BingX, KuCoin or MEXC apps have a similar mode. Prices and fees for "buy" and "convert" in a simplified mode are whatever the order page shows and may differ from the listed spot rate; to pay the listed rate, place the order on the spot trading page.
Spot fees: what you pay after rebate
| Exchange | Spot maker / taker | Spot rebate | Net maker | Net taker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MEXC (BTCUSDT) | 0% / 0.05% | 60% (20% automatic + 40% extra) | 0% | 0.02% |
| KuCoin | 0.1% / 0.1% | 60% (all automatic) | 0.04% | 0.04% |
| BingX | 0.1% / 0.1% | 45% (all paid automatically by BingX) | 0.055% | 0.055% |
| Binance | 0.1% / 0.1% | 40% (20% automatic + 20% extra) | 0.06% | 0.06% |
| Bybit | 0.1% / 0.1% | 40% (all paid by Fee Otter) | 0.06% | 0.06% |
| OKX | 0.08% / 0.1% | 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards | 0.064% | 0.08% |
MEXC checked on 2026-10-24 through the MEXC spot API; the rest from the 2026-10-22 lowest-fee crypto exchange 2026, which lists the official links. Other MEXC pairs have a 0.08% or 0.2% taker fee. Paying Binance spot fees in BNB gives 25% off; see the Binance fee calculator.
Worked example: buying 1,000 USDT of BTC every month
Say you buy 1,000 USDT of BTC with a market order each month, 12 times a year for 12,000 USDT, all as taker:
| Exchange | Fees per year (no rebate) | Net after rebate | Refunded per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| MEXC (BTCUSDT) | 6 | 2.4 | 3.6 |
| KuCoin | 12 | 4.8 | 7.2 |
| BingX | 12 | 6.6 | 5.4 |
| Binance | 12 | 7.2 | 4.8 |
| Bybit | 12 | 7.2 | 4.8 |
| OKX | 12 | 9.6 | 2.4 |
In USDT. Formula: 12,000 × taker rate × (1 − rebate).
If you only buy spot, 12,000 USDT a year costs at most 12 USDT in fees on any of the six, and a rebate saves at most another 7.2 USDT. At this size, picking an exchange where deposits are easy and you understand the app matters more than chasing the lowest fee; the gap only widens with larger volume or futures. To push the cost lower, place limit orders as maker: MEXC BTCUSDT maker is 0%.
Safety: three things to check first
| Exchange | BTC / USDT reserve ratio (snapshot) | Major incident | EU MiCA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | 100.16% / 102.91% (2026-09-01) | 2019-05: 7,000 BTC stolen from a hot wallet, covered in full by SAFU | Not on the register |
| Bybit | 104% / 110% (2026-09-23) | 2025-02: about 1.5 billion US dollars of ETH stolen from a cold wallet, gap closed within 72 hours | Bybit EU authorised (EEA except Malta) |
| OKX | 109% / 105% (2026-09-08) | None recorded on this site | OKX Europe authorised (whole EEA) |
| BingX | Figures only show after login; not listed | 2024-09: about 43 million US dollars stolen from a hot wallet; BingX said it would cover losses from its own capital | BingX EU authorised on 2026-10-13, no launch date announced |
| KuCoin | 109% / 110% (2026-09-30) | 2020-09: about 280 million US dollars stolen from hot wallets, about 84% recovered | KuCoin EU authorised but may not yet commence business |
| MEXC | Official page could not be read; not listed | None recorded on this site | Not on the register; on ESMA's non-compliant list |
Reserve ratios read 2026-09-28 to 2026-10-13; see the proof of reserves comparison. Incidents: exchange hacks and who got repaid. MiCA per the ESMA register downloaded 2026-10-24; details in MiCA-licensed crypto exchanges.
- Turn on 2FA first: use an authenticator app for two-factor verification, then set an anti-phishing code and a withdrawal whitelist.
- Keep only what you use: move long-term holdings to a wallet you control.
- Log in only through official channels: treat links sent in social media messages, and "support staff" who contact you first, as scams.
Licences, reserves, incidents and rebates for each exchange are in the Binance review, OKX review, Bybit review and BingX review.
How beginners should choose
- Most coins, room to try everything later: Binance. If you live in the EU, the UK or the Netherlands, first read Binance alternatives.
- The simpler the app the better: Bybit Lite or Binance Lite, then switch to Pro once you're comfortable.
- Depositing mainly through P2P: see which exchange has more ads and lower costs for your currency; OKX charges no P2P platform fee, and Bybit charges none for most currencies.
- Testing with a small amount, no binding: BingX, where a spot order starts at 0.5 USDT and the 45% rebate is fully automatic.
- Living in the EU: a MiCA-authorised entity such as OKX or Bybit EU.
