OKX Futures Guide 2026: Futures Mode, 100x BTC Tiers, Liquidation Math

OKX perpetuals need Futures mode, with no minimum or test. Fees: 0.02% maker, 0.05% taker; BTC-USDT allows 100x up to 10 BTC. A 10x long liquidates at a 9.6% drop.

To trade perpetual futures on OKX, you first switch your account to Futures mode. There is no minimum balance and no test. Regular users (VIP 0) pay 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on futures. BTC-USDT perpetuals go up to 100x leverage, but once a position exceeds 10 BTC the cap drops to 66.66x. Liquidation kicks in when your maintenance margin ratio falls to 100%. Funding settles every 8 hours, and the BTC cap and floor are ±0.375% (verified 12 October 2026).

Sign up for OKX with the Fee Otter invite code FEEOTTER and your futures fees get a 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards (contact support for exclusive OKX rewards and promotions). Below we cover account modes, fees and leverage tiers in turn, then work through a 10x long to get the actual liquidation price and fees.

Pick an account mode first: Spot mode can't trade futures

OKX has four account modes, and you can only switch between them on the website or in the app. New accounts start in Spot mode, which only allows spot trading and buying options. You can't open perpetuals in it.

ModeCan trade perpetuals?Requirements to switch
Spot modeNoDefault for new accounts
Futures modeYes (isolated or cross)No minimum balance, no test
Multi-currency marginYesFirst switch requires account equity ≥ $10,000 and passing a knowledge test
Portfolio marginYesVIP 3 or above, plus a declaration that you understand portfolio margin

Sources: OKX account mode comparison, Spot mode explained, Portfolio margin explained. On the website: Trade → Futures → Settings → Account mode → Futures mode. If you have open positions when you switch, the system checks your maintenance margin ratio first.

Futures mode is enough for most people. You use one currency as margin and can choose isolated or cross. Multi-currency margin suits people who hold several coins and want to use BTC or ETH directly as margin.

Where are OKX futures unavailable?

According to the OKX risk and compliance disclosure, updated 8 July 2026:

  • No services at all: Afghanistan, Canada, Cuba, Hong Kong, Iran, India, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, North Korea, Syria, Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, some US states and all US territories, and Uzbekistan.
  • Derivatives restricted only: Australia, Brazil, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Users in the European Economic Area get a separate product (X-Perps) and must complete KYC and an appropriateness assessment first. Users in Singapore must pass a 6-question risk test with at least 4 correct answers (OKX knowledge test FAQ).

OKX futures fees

This is the fee structure in effect since 8 April 2026. You move up a tier by meeting either the asset requirement or the 30-day futures volume requirement (OKX fee adjustment notice):

TierAssets (USD)Or 30-day futures volumeMakerTaker
Regular user< 100K< 5M0.020%0.050%
VIP 1≥ 100K≥ 5M0.016%0.045%
VIP 2≥ 200K≥ 10M0.015%0.036%
VIP 3≥ 2M≥ 50M0.010%0.028%
VIP 6≥ 50M≥ 1B0.000%0.025%

These rates apply to the top 10 trading pairs (Group 1). For VIP 0 to 6, the other pairs are the same; VIP 7 and above have a separate schedule. See OKX VIP tiers for the full list.

The taker fee is 2.5 times the maker fee, so a limit order that fills as maker costs only 40% of what the same order would cost as a market order. The worked example below relies on this.

Leverage tiers for BTC-USDT perpetuals

Your leverage cap depends on position size. The bigger the position, the lower the maximum leverage and the higher the maintenance margin rate (MMR). Here are the first five tiers returned by the OKX public API (1 contract = 0.01 BTC; same for isolated and cross):

TierPosition (BTC)Max leverageMaintenance margin rate
10-10100x0.40%
210-5066.66x0.50%
350-20050x0.75%
4200-40040x1.25%
5400-60033.33x1.75%

Source: OKX position-tiers API (12 October 2026). The top tier covers 19,200 to 19,400 BTC, where leverage is down to 2x and the MMR is 48.75%. The coin-margined BTC-USD perpetual uses the same leverage and MMR schedule.

How the liquidation price works: a 10x long, worked through

OKX reduces or liquidates a position when the maintenance margin ratio drops below 100% (OKX liquidation FAQ). The estimated liquidation price for an isolated USDT-margined long is (OKX PnL calculation rules):

Liquidation price = (margin − face value × contracts × average entry price) ÷ [face value × contracts × (MMR + fee rate − 1)]

Now plug in a real order. On 12 October 2026 the BTC mark price was 82,774.5 USDT, and we open a 10x isolated long with 1,000 USDT of margin.

ItemCalculationResult
Position10,000 ÷ 82,774.5, rounded to 12.08 contracts0.1208 BTC (notional 9,999.16 USDT)
Margin9,999.16 ÷ 10999.92 USDT
Applicable tier0.1208 BTC < 10 BTCTier 1, MMR 0.40%
Numerator999.92 − 9,999.16−8,999.24
Denominator0.1208 × (0.004 + 0.0005 − 1)−0.120256
Estimated liquidation price−8,999.24 ÷ −0.120256about 74,834 USDT

A 10x long gets liquidated after a drop of about 9.6%, before the price falls the full 10%. The rough "1 ÷ leverage" estimate gives about 74,497 USDT. The real liquidation price is about 337 USDT higher, and the gap comes from maintenance margin and the liquidation fee. At higher leverage, that gap takes up a larger share of your margin.

We used the taker rate as the fee rate in the formula (OKX says the liquidation fee is based on your fee tier). Where funding and the opening fee are deducted from also shifts the numbers slightly, so go by the estimated liquidation price shown on the order page. Cross margin has no single formula; the system estimates it from the equity of the whole account.

Partial liquidation, the risk reserve and auto-deleveraging

  • Step-by-step reduction: When liquidation is triggered, the system first cancels your open orders and then reduces the position in steps. After each step it recalculates using the MMR of the tier the remaining position falls into, and it stops once the requirement is met, so the whole position isn't necessarily closed (tiered maintenance margin rules).
  • Cross margin warning: When your cross maintenance margin ratio falls below 300%, OKX sends a liquidation warning.
  • Risk reserve: OKX funds it and keeps it separate, and leftover margin from liquidations is added to it. It is not an insurance product. On 12 October 2026 the API showed about 91.02 million USDT in the reserve for BTC-USDT perpetuals (OKX risk reserve explained).
  • Auto-deleveraging (ADL): If the reserve falls well below a preset threshold, the system reduces opposing positions in ranked order, starting with the most profitable and most highly leveraged. An indicator of 1 to 5 bars on screen shows your rank, and 5 bars means you're first in line. Positions reduced by ADL are not charged a fee (OKX auto-deleveraging explained).

Funding rates

OKX perpetuals settle funding every 8 hours by default (UTC 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00). A few contracts settle every 1, 2 or 4 hours. If the rate hits its cap or floor at settlement, the settlement frequency steps up one level, and it only returns to normal after the rate stays within ±0.20% for 12 hours in a row (OKX funding fee mechanism).

For BTC-USDT perpetuals the cap and floor are ±0.375%, and the interest rate component is fixed at 0.01%. The 10 settlements from 9 to 12 October 2026 ranged from −0.0022% to +0.0043% (OKX funding rate history API). At +0.004%, a 10,000 USDT position pays about 0.4 USDT every 8 hours, which is normally far less than trading fees. In a strongly one-sided market the rate can grow many times larger.

To compare funding rates across exchanges, see the funding rate comparison tool.

How much of your margin goes to fees? Maker orders cost 40% of taker

Take the same 10x long from above, with a notional of 9,999.16 USDT and the same price at open and close:

Order typeOpen + close feesShare of marginAfter 20% automatic rebate
Market on both sides (taker 0.05%)10.00 USDT1.0%8.00 USDT
Maker only on both sides (maker 0.02%)4.00 USDT0.4%3.20 USDT

At 10x leverage, one round trip with market orders costs 1% of your margin up front. Do that 20 times in a month and fees alone eat 20% of your margin. There are two ways to bring the cost down:

  • Use Post only: The order rests on the book, and if it would fill immediately it is cancelled instead, so it always fills at the maker rate (OKX order types explained). Trailing stops place a market order when triggered and are charged the taker rate.
  • Get a rebate: Sign up with the invite code FEEOTTER and your futures fees get a 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards.

Practise with demo trading first

Risks to understand before trading OKX futures

  • High leverage magnifies losses: At 100x, a move of less than 1% against you can liquidate your position. If you're new, start with low leverage and small amounts while you learn the rules.
  • Liquidation fees and slippage: A liquidation fee is charged on top when you're liquidated, and in fast markets the fill price can be worse than estimated.
  • Don't keep long-term or large holdings on an exchange: Keep only the margin you're actively using in your trading account, and store long-term holdings in a hardware cold wallet.
  • Check that your region is supported: OKX derivatives are not available in the regions listed above.

For OKX's reserve ratio and how to verify it, see OKX proof of reserves.

FAQ

Do I need to pass a test to trade futures on OKX?

Not to switch to Futures mode. Only the first switch to multi-currency margin requires a knowledge test. Users in Singapore and the European Economic Area have their own local tests or assessments.

What are OKX futures fees?

Regular users pay 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker, and rates fall as your VIP tier rises. Sign up with the invite code FEEOTTER to get a 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards.

What is the maximum leverage on OKX BTC futures?

BTC-USDT perpetuals go up to 100x, but only for positions up to 10 BTC. From 10 to 50 BTC the cap is 66.66x, and it keeps falling as the position grows.

How often does OKX charge funding?

Most contracts settle every 8 hours (UTC 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00), and a few settle every 1, 2 or 4 hours. When the rate hits its cap or floor, settlement temporarily becomes more frequent.

How far can a 10x position fall before it's liquidated?

Using BTC in October 2026 as an example, an isolated 10x long reaches its estimated liquidation price after a drop of about 9.6%. That's earlier than a flat 10% because maintenance margin and the liquidation fee are also deducted.
