The reasons exchanges give for failed copy trades fall into about five groups: not enough margin in the copy account, an order amount below the contract's minimum order size, a limit being hit (your own maximum total, the lead trader's follower slots or position quota), a price outside slippage protection, and leverage or margin mode that doesn't match the lead trader. The official help pages of Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, BingX and MEXC each list some of these, and OKX and Bybit send an in-app message and an email saying which one it was (checked 2026-10-23).
Read the reason in the notification first, then fix it with the table below; the usual fix is a copy-setting change or more margin. This guide sets out the error reasons and limits from all six exchanges, works through an example where the margin runs out, gives a checklist, and ends with whether copy trading fees earn a rebate.
Quick answer
- Insufficient margin: listed first by every exchange. Add funds to the copy account or lower the amount per order.
- Below minimum order size: if amount per order × leverage gives a position smaller than the contract minimum, the copy fails. Raise the amount per order.
- A limit is hit: your maximum total, full follower slots, or the combined position of the lead trader and copiers reaching its cap all stop new copies.
- Slippage protection: OKX uses a fixed 0.5%; Binance and Bitget default to 0.5%, adjustable from 0.1% to 3%; MEXC uses IOC orders that cancel if nothing fills within your slippage range.
- Mode conflicts: on Binance, choosing "follow the lead trader's leverage" fails if your leverage differs; on OKX, one-way mode lets you copy only 1 lead trader; on BingX, copies fail if the lead trader uses one-way or multi-assets mode.
Error reasons and fixes
| Error | Exchanges that list it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not enough available margin | Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, BingX | Add funds or lower the amount per order; Bybit emails you after more than 5 insufficient-balance misses in Advanced Copy mode |
| Amount per order too low, below minimum order size | Binance (notional below the minimum), OKX, Bybit, Bitget | Raise the amount or ratio per order; minimums are in the contract trading rules |
| Your maximum total reached | OKX, Bybit (max position margin per contract, daily limit), Bitget (total margin and total position value per trader) | Raise the limit, or wait for older positions to close |
| Lead trader's slots or position quota full | Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, BingX | Pick another lead trader, or wait for room |
| Slippage above your setting | Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, BingX, MEXC | Widen slippage, accepting a worse entry |
| Leverage, margin mode or position mode mismatch | Binance, Bitget, BingX, OKX, Bybit | Follow the lead trader's settings, or add margin so leverage can sync |
| Lead trader's order not fully filled | Binance (limit and stop-limit), Bitget, BingX | Nothing to do; only fully filled orders are copied |
| Pair not supported for copy trading | BingX; OKX and Bybit publish supported lists | Check the list and choose another lead trader |

Binance: six failure reasons and auto-close
Binance's futures copy trading FAQ lists six causes: the copy portfolio's available margin is insufficient; the lead trader opened with a limit or stop-limit order that did not fully fill (copies trigger only on a full fill); market slippage exceeded the limit; the position's notional is below the symbol's minimum; the system detects that your leverage is inconsistent with the lead trader's; and the lead trader's and all copiers' positions together exceed the maximum position for that leverage (Binance futures copy trading FAQ, updated 2026-07-16).
Limits: you invest 10 to 300,000 USDT, with a default minimum of 10 USDT that lead traders can raise; leverage either follows the lead trader or is fixed at 1x to 10x, and changing it with open positions may fail; margin mode can follow the lead trader or be set to cross or isolated, and Binance warns it may end up different from the lead trader's; slippage can be set from 0.1% to 3%, defaulting to 0.5% on BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT and 1.5% elsewhere, and protects entries only (How to use Binance futures copy trading, updated 2026-10-21).
If a Binance copy portfolio's margin is below the minimum copy amount and 5 opening copies fail in a row, the daily check closes the portfolio automatically. When you see repeated failures, add margin first.
OKX: the notification gives the reason
OKX sends an in-app notice and an email when a copy fails. Its official reasons for failed openings: not enough USDT in the trading account for the margin (for example, an order needs 20 USDT and you have less); an amount per order so low it falls below the minimum order size; total investment above the maximum you set; an entry more than 0.5% away from the lead trader's, cancelled by slippage protection; in smart sync, a higher asset ratio in the position than the lead trader has; and IOC orders that partly fail to fill for lack of depth and keep failing on retry. On the lead trader's side: the lead trader's and copiers' combined position in one contract and direction reaching its cap (OKX's example is a 50,000,000 USDT BTCUSDT perpetual long), more than 500 lead trades in a day, or a trading account below 500 USDT (OKX copy trade failure reasons, updated 2026-08-26).
Limits: fixed amount 10 to 100,000 USDT per order, proportional 0.01x to 100x, maximum total 10 to 10,000,000 USDT; you can copy up to 10 lead traders in Open/Close (hedge) mode and 1 in Buy/Sell (one-way) mode (OKX futures copy trading limits, updated 2026-08-26). That limits page gives a 100,000,000 USDT lead trading position cap for BTC, ETH, XRP and SOL, which differs from the example on the failure page, so the live rule applies. Funds go in the trading account, and sub-accounts can copy. In extreme markets the system may be unable to close copy positions, and OKX will ask you to close them manually.
Bybit: repeated failures unfollow the Master Trader
Bybit Copy Trading Classic lists these reasons: not enough funds in the copy trading account; the Master Trader's copy trade quota is full (5% of the pair's open interest, counting the Master Trader and all followers together); slippage above your maximum; your maximum position margin per contract or daily limit reached; and CopyGuard skipping an entry worse than the Master's, which does not count as a failure. If following fails at the start, the usual reasons are that the Master Trader's follower limit is full or the Master Trader has been removed (Bybit Copy Trading Classic FAQ, updated 2026-10-15).
If copies fail for insufficient order cost 20 times in a row, or 100 times within 24 hours, and you hold no open position, Bybit unfollows that Master Trader for you. Insufficient order cost means either too little balance in the copy account or an order cost and leverage that can't meet the minimum order size.
Limits: a 100 USDT minimum investment that Master Traders can raise; up to 10 Master Traders at once; a 300,000 USDT maximum cumulative order value per pair; and a copy mode you can't switch once copying, so you must cancel and start again, possibly losing your slot (Bybit Copy Trading Classic guide, updated 2026-10-15). If you chose "Follow Trader's Leverage" and your leverage still differs, your balance was too low when the Master Trader changed leverage. Add funds and it re-aligns on the Master's next action, or open the copy settings and click "Configure Settings" to recheck now.
Bitget: the most caps to watch
Bitget's copier guide lists these failure reasons: the trader hit the platform copy limit for that token; the trader exceeded one opening trade every 3 seconds; the trader cancelled a partly filled order (only fully filled orders are copied); your available balance is below the minimum order size; and slippage exceeded your setting. Limits: at least 50 USDT on the first transfer, or the trader's higher minimum, and at least 50 USDT kept in the copy account; up to 10 traders; leverage that follows the trader or is fixed at 1x to 10x; cross margin only for now; and slippage defaulting to 0.5%, adjustable from 0.1% to 3% (Bitget new futures copy trading guide, 2026-01-09).
A separate article lists 12 situations that limit copies, including per-trade copied margin and quantity caps, a total margin cap per trader (platform maximum 100,000 USDT), a total position value cap (default 1,000,000 USDT), position tier limits, your own open interest limit, a trader placing more than three orders in one second, and leverage sync failures when you follow the trader's leverage; for a sync failure, add futures balance and wait for the automatic retry on the trader's next opening (Bitget copy order limits, 2026-04-27).
BingX: the lead trader's position mode matters too
BingX's Perpetual Futures Copy Trading 2.0 rules list why a copy doesn't go through: the trader uses multi-assets mode or one-way mode; the pair isn't supported for copy trading; the trader's order didn't fully fill; your available margin is too low; your margin mode or leverage differs from the trader's; the position value would exceed the allowed maximum; the fill price is worse than your maximum slippage or the zero-slippage limit; maintenance, network problems or unusual volatility; and leverage permissions still being rolled out in batches. You can copy up to 20 traders, each trader can have up to 2,000 copiers, and leverage and margin mode follow the trader by default (BingX copier rules, 2025-05-14). The page mentions minimum opening and closing amounts and a minimum margin per order without giving figures; go by the order page.
MEXC: an unfilled IOC order counts as failed
MEXC places copy trades as IOC limit orders within your slippage setting; if nothing matches in that range, the order is cancelled automatically, counts as a failure and is not copied again. Copy trading funds must be at least 30 USDT, and margin mode can follow the trader or be fixed to cross or isolated (MEXC copy trade terms explained, 2026-09-21). You need at least 30 USDT in the Spot account to follow a trader, and traders must use hedge mode and respect leverage limits (MEXC copy trade guide). MEXC's official pages do not give a full list of failure reasons.
Worked example: why fixed amount mode fails halfway
Say you put 100 USDT into a Binance copy portfolio in Fixed Amount mode with 30 USDT of margin per order. The lead trader opens four positions: the first three take 30 USDT each, 90 USDT in total, leaving 10 USDT; the fourth needs 30 USDT and fails for insufficient margin. Any further openings fail the same way until those three positions close.
There are two fixes: cut the margin per order to 20 USDT, so 100 USDT covers five orders, or switch to Fixed Ratio so the system scales each trade to your total investment. With the first fix, check that each order's notional stays above the minimum: 20 USDT of margin at 5x is 100 USDT of notional.

Do copy trading fees earn a rebate?
Copied orders are filled in your own account and charged normal futures fees. OKX says copy trading fees are the same as regular fees for your tier, and MEXC says followers pay nothing beyond standard trading fees, funding fees and profit share. The lead trader's profit share is not a trading fee, so it earns no rebate. How rebates on copy trading fees work at each exchange:
- Binance: the FAQ answers directly, "your inviter can receive referral commission for your lead/copying trading fees." With code FEEOTTER, copy trading fees get the same 40% (20% automatic + 20% extra).
- OKX: the affiliate rules (updated 2026-09-29) don't mention copy trading separately, so the settlement record decides; OKX is 20% automatic rebate + exclusive rewards.
- Bybit: the official pages we read don't say, so the settlement record decides; Bybit is 40% (all paid by Fee Otter).
- Bitget: the affiliate FAQ lists spot, futures and Onchain as rebate categories without mentioning copy trading (Bitget affiliate FAQ, 2026-05-28), so the settlement record decides; Bitget is 50% (20% automatic + 30% extra).
- BingX: copied opens and closes are ordinary futures trades in your account, so their fees count toward the rebate as usual. Sign up with the invite code FEEOTTER and BingX automatically returns 45% on every trade, all paid by BingX, with no UID binding needed; see BingX copy trading guide for a full example.
- MEXC: the affiliate FAQ doesn't mention copy trading, but it says API trades earn no commission, fees offset by bonuses earn none, and zero-fee pairs generate none (MEXC affiliate FAQ, 2026-07-20). MEXC is 60% (20% automatic + 40% extra) with code mexc-FEEOTTER.
On Binance, for example: 50,000 USDT of copied notional in a month, all taker at 0.05%, is 25 USDT in fees, and the 40% rebate with FEEOTTER returns 10 USDT. If a rebate doesn't arrive, see rebate not received.
Copy trading built into an exchange is a legitimate product, and your funds stay in your own account. A chat group that asks for your password or API keys to "manage" your account, or tells you to send money to an address before you can copy, is not exchange copy trading. Getting a rebate never requires handing over your account or API keys either. Warning signs are in KOL signal and copy-trade scam warning.
